What are the statistics telling us about trade and technical workers sourced from overseas?

Key Points:

  • The number of subclass 457 primary visa applications granted for Technicians and Trade Workers in 2012-13, up until 31 March 2013 was 20% less than the same period last year.
  • There has been a general downtrend in visa grants since the peak in August 2012. This downward grant trend continued in March 2013 except for the Northern Territory and Western Australia and
  • to a lesser degree in Queensland.
  • Employers are still using the 457 program to fill vacancies in the following occupations (in the top 10 occupations)
